Kelly and Whitney

Pregnant with her first child, Kelly Bolton Jordan experienced an unexpected complication that placed the lives of both her and her 25-week-old fetus at risk. Her doctors were not equipped to handle her condition so they so they transferred her to The MED’s High-Risk Obstetrics Center.

“They were like the green berets of nursing,” said Kelly. “The doctors held my hand and promised they would do all they could. Nurses stayed with me 24 hours a day.”

Several days later, Kelly’s health began to fail and she was rushed to surgery to begin the delivery. Weighing only a pound, baby girl Whitney was delivered into The MED’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at the Sheldon B. Korones Newborn Center, where Kelly witnessed a doctor cry as she was trying to get an IV into the tiny arm of Kelly’s baby. Kelly’s daughter spent three months in the NICU as The MED’s doctors fought to save her life.

Today Whitney is happy and healthy and has only two tiny scars. She calls them “angel kisses.” Whitney asks for the same bedtime story every night, the one where the angels at The MED saved her and her mommy.
