Stabbing accident turns former racecar driver into huge MED fan

Henry Sexton used to race cars and motorcycles and is a “frequent” hospital patient. He had never been to The MED before “the incident,” and now says, “Hands down this is the best service I’ve ever received.”

Henry’s relationship with The MED began last August. He had told his children countless times NOT to open something with a knife. It was excellent advice, if only he had applied it to himself.

When Henry tried to open the packaging to an MP3 player and had trouble, his natural solution was to grab a knife. It was not just any knife, but one that he’d purchased because of claims that it was “one of the sharpest knives in the world.”

As he pulled the knife toward his body, it slipped through the packaging, stabbing him in the abdomen.

Henry went to the emergency room at his “home hospital,” Methodist North. As he sat in the waiting room bleeding from his abdomen, he felt worse and worse. After what felt like an eternity, he went to the nurses’ station and said he thought he was bleeding internally.

A physician ordered a CT scan, which confirmed Henry was bleeding internally, in fact, severely.

Methodist North transferred Henry to the Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center.

“Before this, I heard a lot of bad things about The MED,” said Henry recalling that time. “I’m here to tell you my experience couldn’t have been better.”

“When I was wheeled into the trauma center, all the doctors and nurses were ready and waiting for me,” said Henry. “They snatched me off the gurney and onto the trauma bed and began working on me immediately.”

The doctor explained everything to Henry – what they were going to do, what they were looking for, and the possible outcomes. He remembers how very direct and thorough the doctor was.

“I arrived at the MED at 2:25 a.m. and was in the operating room at 2:40 a.m.,” said Henry, amazed by how fast they were.

Post-surgery, Henry was moved to a room where he continued to receive outstanding service.

“From the lady who came into my room to pull the trash, to the people who changed my sheets, the staff was so kind and polite,” Henry recounted. “I was especially struck by the young woman who brought the food by. I wasn’t allowed to eat solid food for a while so I had no meals. One day the lady who delivered the meals actually came into my room and apologized that she didn’t have food for me.”

“They were always in my room exactly when I needed them,” said Henry. “I was there eight days and only had to push the call button for the nurse one time during my stay. I want to tell the doctors and employees how appreciative I am and dispel the idea that The MED is anything other than excellent.”
