I, like so many Memphis area citizens, was completely unfamiliar with the Regional Medical Center at Memphis. I knew about it, I read about it, I commiserated about its financial woes. That changed dramatically over the Fourth of July weekend. One of my sons was hit by a hit-and-run driver as he crossed the street to retrieve something from his car. He had no ID on him because he was in front of his home. Fortunately, someone identified him. Taken to The Med, he received the best care possible. When I arrived at The Med, I was surprised at how huge it is; not being familiar with it, of course we went to the wrong entrance, which entailed a very long journey to the trauma unit.
I also found out that you are not allowed in the trauma unit without a picture ID. You are given a picture badge that must be worn at all times. This is a great idea. They don't need all kinds of people wandering around the unit, not knowing who they are or whom they are visiting.
But most of all, everything I ever heard about The Med is true. It is a great, great place to take care of trauma victims. It is scary to see a loved one unconscious on a respirator. But thanks to the wonderful care, patient is now up and walking around in their rehab unit and will soon be going home.
The Med is always in dire need of help and everyone should help, because you never know from one minute to the next when someone you love might be the victim of an accident.
Thank you, Med, from a grateful parent.
