Keep 'Em Flying

Friends of The MED is a grassroots, non-profit association of Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas residents who care about preserving our access to the one and only designated Trauma Center at The MED.

I live in Tennessee, Mississippi or Arkansas and I have health insurance. Why do I need The MED?

The Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center The MED is only Level I Trauma Center that serves West Tennessee, North Mississippi and East Arkansas.

If you drive in Tennessee, North Mississippi or in East Arkansas, and if you are involved in a serious accident, you will be airlifted straight to the Trauma Center at The MED, where a team of 15 medical experts will assess your injuries and provide you with life-saving services. Your health insurance will help to pay for those services.

What is a Level I Trauma Center?

A Level I Trauma Center is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by a team of medical experts who are trained and ready at any moment to take care of many life-and-death situations.

Why is it important to have a Trauma Center in close proximity?

The Golden Hour, the first hour after a serious injury is very critical. If a patient is not stabilized during the Golden Hour, chances of survival are very slim. Having a Level I Trauma Center in our back yard means that help is close by and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A helicopter is standing by ad can arrive at the location of the accident within minutes.

If I am injured, won't my local community hospital take care of me?

A local community hospital is designed to take care of routine medical needs and only minor emergency situations. The blood supply at a local hospital is very limited. In a serious motor vehicle accident, it is not unusual to have more than two vehicles involved, with a number of people sustaining serious injuries, possibly requiring a blood transfusion. A local community hospital's resources would be quickly overwhelmed in such a situation.

Why is it important to have a Level I Burn Center?

Many motor vehicle accidents result in something catching on fire. A large number of people injured in car crashes suffer serious burns in addition to other injuries. The MED is home to the Elvis Presley Memorial (Level I) Trauma Center and the Firefighters (Level I) Burn Center.
